Who I am, what I do

I am a freelance travel journalist and former travel editor who has spent the past five years reviewing British hotels and B&Bs every week for the Guardian. I also write for the glossies – most regularly in Conde Nast Traveller but also Red and Coast. Travelling in Britain is what I love to do. Hence this blog.
It is an archive of my favourite reviews, listed as pages, and grouped into themes, such as Beside the Seaside. This is also where I write about stuff that I like, which reflects my taste, my interests, information which might otherwise languish in a notebook.
Writing isn’t all I do. Travelling around the UK gives me a unique overview of the domestic holiday and hotel scene, the richness of regional difference and diversity, and emerging trends.
I can help tourism businesses to maximise and publicise, talk a good talk at a conference and advise on strategies to boost visitor economy (I was recently invited to Yorkshire to give a presentation entitled: Put your Town on the Tourist Map).
To contact me about consultancy write to info@sallyshalam.co.uk.
Press releases, etc, are best sent to my regular email address at the Guardian (sally.shalam@guardian.co.uk).
Please leave tips, recommendations and responses to blogposts via the Comment box after each post.
