For an island there is a remarkable dearth of really fantastic coastal hotels – you’d think we would have an indigenous chain whose name is synonymous with seaside holidays, but the only one I can think of is Butlins. My collection here stretches from Kent to Northern Ireland and includes outstanding bed and breakfasts, the odd hotel and also my current favourite self-catering houses.
