Haven’t been to Whitstable yet, but I like Broadstairs. My only overnight stay in Margate took place before the opening of the Turner Centre and I saw the same Channel charm in its old town, beach, and the Regency square on which I stayed (at the Reading Rooms B&B) with its little theatre. Regeneration is a slow process … but I think Margate has sufficient attributes … time will tell!

I’m not overly impressed with and Margate at the moment. I think we’ve still got a way to go before we can put it on par with the likes of Broadstairs and Whitstable on the Kent coast.

I think it needs a little bit more than the ‘Bilbao effect’ to make it a decent seaside town.

Support and encouragement for small local business is crucial, I agree. But image is hugely important. I tried to get hold of some evocative shots, architecture, deserted beach, etc, for this post and drew a blank from the tourist board which had a somewhat cheesy selection. So they kind of shoot themselves in the foot.

Great insight! It is very easy to suggest rebranding and many people will benefit from all the work associated with it – unfortunately, it is the consultants rather than the town. I am all for regeneration and change, but the name of a town to be changed is totally unnecessary and ever so costly. Funds would be better allocated to helping small businesses re-invent themselves and to see opportunities in a holistic manner.

An excellent blog post and I think Camber Sands & Rye are prime examples of a coastal resort that play to the positives of the Great British seaside. With hoteliers and restaurants taking advantage of their area to provide locally sourced food. New holiday lets appreciating their target market. A prime example being dog friendly lets and winter breaks by the sea

All supported by a chamber of commerce being proactive in promoting events that bring tourism into the towns. In the case of Rye & Camber this includes Rye Bay Scallop Week, Bonfire night and wild boar week.

I had a week at Butlin’s with my family this year and we had a great time. Didn’t see much in the way of a fledgling real food movement though. Come to think of it, vegetables were quite a rare sighting but then what would you expect.
Skegness does have some tired looking parts that could do with an update but to change its name would be an outrage. Why give away their proud Viking name? It would be like Scratchwood motorway services rebranding. Oops.
